The 84 ghats of Varanasi run 6.5 km along the western bank of the Ganga — from Assi in the south to Raj Ghat in the north. Not all ghats are equal for a pilgrim's purposes. The central stretch — Dashashwamedh, Munshi, Darbhanga, Lalita — is the ritual heart. The nightly Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh draws thousands and runs approximately 45–60 minutes starting around 7 PM. Stay within a short walk and you arrive unhurried; stay further away and you're planning logistics.
Manikarnika and Harishchandra are the two cremation ghats — burning continuously. They are deeply meaningful to visit; less comfortable as immediate neighbours. Most experienced pilgrims stay at a reasonable distance and walk there deliberately rather than base themselves adjacent.
The sunrise boat ride at roughly 5:30–6:30 AM is not optional if this is your only Varanasi trip. You see the entire ghat panorama from the river in amber light — pilgrims bathing, priests beginning rituals, cremation smoke rising at Manikarnika. Hotels within a short walk allow an easy pre-dawn walk. Negotiate a private boat at your hotel's ghat rather than the shared boats at busy launch points.
For Dev Deepawali (November full moon), all 84 ghats light up with oil lamps simultaneously — one of the most extraordinary visual experiences in India. Book ghat-adjacent accommodation 4–6 months ahead for this date.
