Varanasi Airport · Lal Bahadur Shastri International (VNS)
Varanasi Airport guide.
From Babatpur to the ghats.
Everything you need for a smooth arrival at VNS: terminal facilities, prepaid taxi and app cabs, how long the drive to the ghats really takes, and when to arrive for your departure.
The Basics
Where it is &
what to expect.
Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS) sits at Babatpur, about 25 km north-west of the riverfront. It serves both domestic and international flights from a single integrated terminal, and it’s a refreshingly calm airport to land at — pilgrims and first-time visitors find it far less daunting than a big metro hub. Note that Sarnath actually lies closer to the airport than the main ghats do, which is handy if you want to fit it in on the way.

Inside The Terminal
Facilities
at VNS.
The terminal covers the essentials without the sprawl of a metro airport — easy to find your way around, even after a long-haul connection.
- ✓A single integrated terminal handles both domestic and international flights, with a recently expanded arrivals and check-in area to cope with rising pilgrim traffic.
- ✓Inside you’ll find ATMs, currency exchange, a few food and beverage outlets, a small range of shops, and prayer/wheelchair assistance on request.
- ✓Free Wi-Fi is available in the terminal; charging points are dotted around the seating areas.
- ✓CISF security and clearly signposted gates keep the flow simple — it’s a far calmer airport to navigate than a big metro hub.
- ✓For international arrivals, immigration and customs are on the ground floor; e-Visa holders use the designated counters.
Step By Step
The arrivals
flow, simplified.
From wheels-down to your car, here’s exactly how arrival works — usually quick, thanks to the compact terminal.
- ✓Disembark, walk to baggage reclaim, and collect your bags — the compact terminal means this is usually quick.
- ✓Exit into the arrivals concourse, where the prepaid taxi counter and the app-cab pickup bay are both clearly signed.
- ✓If you’ve pre-booked a private transfer (ours, or your hotel’s), your driver waits in the meet-and-greet area with a name board.
- ✓Step out and you’re on the road to the ghats — about 25 km, with the drive easing once you clear the airport approach.

from VNS.
Indicative road distances and typical drive times from the airport. Allow extra during festivals and the evening Ganga aarti rush around Godowlia.
Getting Into Town
Prepaid taxi,
app cabs & transfers.
- ✓Use the official prepaid taxi counter inside arrivals — you pay a fixed, displayed fare and avoid roadside haggling.
- ✓App cabs (Ola/Uber) operate from a marked pickup bay; availability is good by day but thins late at night, so pre-booking helps.
- ✓Auto-rickshaws are cheaper but not ideal with luggage or for the full 25 km run into the city.
- ✓For a smooth pilgrim arrival, a pre-booked private AC car with a driver who knows the ghat lanes is the easiest option — it’s included in our packages.
- ✓Evening Ganga aarti traffic around Godowlia can add 20–30 minutes; we time pickups to avoid the worst of it where possible.

Flying Out
When to arrive
for departure.
The single terminal can bunch up when several flights leave at once — a little buffer keeps your exit calm and your prasad and Ganga jal packed the right way.
- ✓Reach the airport about 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one — the single terminal can bottleneck at security during peak banks of departures.
- ✓Allow 45–60 minutes for the drive from the ghats, and more during festival periods or evening aarti.
- ✓Carry a printed or digital boarding pass and a valid photo ID; entry to the terminal requires both.
- ✓Pack any Ganga jal (holy water) and prasad sensibly — liquids over 100 ml must go in checked baggage.
- ✓Food options airside are limited, so eat before security if you’re particular about meals.
